Los Altos girl campaigns to boost squash prize money
It took an inspired 10-year-old Los Altos girl to transform the women’s division of the 2015 Netsuite Open Squash Championships into a world-ranking event.
Mika Bardin was front and center when event organizers honored 2015 women’s champion Amanda Sobhy at the conclusion of the tournament, held Sept. 25-29 at Justin Herman Plaza in San Francisco. Mika led the effort to increase the women’s prize money to $25,000 through a GoFundMe.com page and a girls empowerment Facebook page she started dubbed “GirlShape.”
Event producer John Nimick brought Mika up to the winners’ platform to acknowledge her contributions.
Mika, already a nationally ranked squash player in her age group, told the tournament gathering that “‘GirlShape’ is all about girls getting in shape and being proud of themselves.”
